Dutch philologists and general linguistic theory. Anglo-Dutch relations in the eighteenth century
This paper deals with the works of the Schola Hemsterhusiana, a group of Dutch classical scholars such as L.C. Valckenaer and J.D. van Lennep, who can be considered as followers of the renowned linguist Tiberius Hemsterhuis (1685-1766). These works are discussed within their contemporary linguistic and methodological context, and their relation with the new comparative historical approach is pointed out.
